About the original: During the "Blitzkriegs" of 1939-1940, the need to carry out rapid successive relocations of the Luftwaffe squadrons and their personnel was quickly recognised.
This experience led to the commissioning of the Graf Zeppelin Research Institute (FGZ) in 1943 to find a simple solution to this problem. Their solution was to use the already existing aircraft for the transport of their personnel. Wind tunnel tests were carried out with a Junkers Ju 87. Flight tests were carried out with a Klemm Kl 25 and a Junkers Ju 87 D-3.
These cabins were built of wooden frames, covered with fabric and also fitted with windows. Two cabins were placed on each side of the wings, outside the range of the elevator.
According to the FGZ, the flight characteristics were not significantly worsened by the addition of the personal pods. The speed was only reduced by 10%. With these add-on cabins, for example, a He 111 could carry 16 men, a Ju 87 about 8 and Bf 109 or Fw 190 2 men each.
